Gum,
that forbidden classroom
fruit, can be the inspiration for writing simple poetry.
Read
and discuss some poems that demonstrate authors' imagery using one or
several of the five senses.
Distribute
sticks of sugar free gum.
Ask
questions, such as:
"What does the gum look like?"
"How does it feel?"
"How
does it smell?"
"How
does it sound as you chew it?"
"How
does it taste?"
Have
the children write words or
phrases that immediately come to their minds.
Students
can compose their own poems using as many of their "first impression"
words and phrases as possible.
