Skimming,
a reading skill that can be
acquired quite easily, is more fun to learn in practice sessions that
are short and have a "game element."
For
word-skimming, have the students
quickly scan each page of a current reading
assignment
in sequence.
After
you say each of these phrases, "I
see a word that means. . .."
"I see a word that is the opposite of "
"I see a word with the suffix "ness"
"I see a word that is sad,"
"I see a word that makes me hungry,"
"I see a word that rhymes with" ..and so on.
Have
the children respond orally.
Variation:
Ask
individual students to do the
questioning while you skim along with the others.
